Coach Mayoyo defends St Anthony Boys shift as KSSSA hits back hard
A fierce blame game has erupted between Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) officials and St Anthony’s Boys High School coach Peter Mayoyo, as officials accuse the school of past dirty tactics while the trainer insists their focus has shifted to grooming players for foreign leagues rather than chasing local glory.
The high-ranking officials were reacting on July 23, 2025, to a PD Wikendi Sports feature of July 19-20, 2025, titled “Is St Anthony’s Boys glory fading away?” in which Mayoyo blamed alleged corruption by KSSSA officials for the school’s decline in the national ball games glory as successive champions.
In an exclusive interview with People Sports, KSSSA officials led by Siaya County Secondary Schools Sports Association (SCSSSA) secretary David Obiero dismissed Mayoyo’s contention that KSSSA is to blame for St Anthony’s dip in performance.
Obiero said the previous glorious performance St Anthony’s enjoyed in the national KSSSA boys’ football was due to alleged use of unsporting dirty tactics by the school administration and the school team’s technical bench headed by Mayoyo.
“His defence is not making sense at all. St Anthony’s, who call themselves Solidarity, cannot be bigger than KSSSA. The truth is Mayoyo’s previous dirty sporting tactics like age cheating and falsifying players’ birth certificates and school documents have been unearthed,” Obiero disclosed, laughing off Mayoyo’s claims.
Obiero added, “Look at the support the administration gives schools like Asumbi Girls High School basketball team, Nyakach Girls High School’s football team, Plateau Queens, Butere Girls High School and St Mary’s Yala High School; these schools are emerging as new sporting powerhouses.”
Meanwhile, Western Regional Secondary Schools Sports Association (WRSSSA) Secretary General Quinto Omusugu was more blunt in an interview with People Sports about the alleged unsporting tactics Mayoyo previously used to win the KSSSA national boys’ football title.
