Clarke Oduor’s Grimsby Town beaten days after Carabao Cup triumph over Man United

Kenyan international Clarke Oduor and Grimsby Town suffered a first league defeat against Bristol Rovers on Saturday, August 30, 2025, just three days after their thrilling Carabao Cup upset against Manchester United.

Grimsby succumbed to the loss in what went down as the Kenyan’s league debut. Oduor entered the fray in the added seven minutes but could do little to help; the Blundell Park team did little to salvage anything from the clash.

The tie was the Kenyan’s second clash after making his debut in the Carabao Cup after signing on Tuesday evening, August 26, just hours before their second-round clash at Blundell Park.

Grimsby fell behind in the first half from a Southam Hales goal.

David Artell introduced the Harambee Stars ace late on as the Mariners kept pushing forward in search of a goal that would have kept their unbeaten start to the season going, but it was not to be, and instead, they were left to reflect on a first defeat of 2025-26.

Against Manchester United on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, Oduor marked a whirlwind debut, as the League Two side stunned Premier League giants Manchester United in the Carabao Cup.

The Kenyan international was introduced in the 72nd minute with his new side holding an unlikely 2-0 lead against Ruben Amorim’s men.

Grimsby had taken a shock advantage through Charles Vernam, who struck in the 22nd minute, before Tyrell Nathaniel Warren doubled the lead eight minutes later.

Manchester United rallied late, with Bryan Mbeumo reducing the deficit in the 75th minute and Harry Maguire forcing extra time with a dramatic equaliser in the 89th minute.

The tie went to penalties after finishing 2-2 in regular time.

In a nerve-shredding shootout, Oduor missed his spot kick that was saved by André Onana, but his teammates held their nerve in an extraordinary contest that ended 12-11 in favour of the League Two minnows.

The side will be next in action on Tuesday, when they open their Vertu Trophy campaign with a trip to Bradford City.
