Caren Chepng’eno of Tiloi Primary School of Nakuru County was in a class of her own when she convincingly won the girls 5000m race during the Rift Valley Primary Schools athletics championships.

Chepng’eno who is following in the footsteps of her elder sister, Purity Kirui, clocked 16 minutes and 14 seconds during the championships held in Nyahururu on Wednesday.

Dorothy Jerop of Kipchiloi Primary School, Elgeyo Marakwet County was second in 16 minutes and nine seconds.

Eileen Chepkoech from Kitoi Primary School, Kericho was third in 16:55 and Purity Jeptum of Samoget primary of Nandi County fourth in 17.05.

According to the Rift Valley Primary Schools Sports Association chairman Daniel Kiptis, the athletes who were selected during the championships, will represent the region in the national primary schools’ athletics championships in Meru County.

 Kiptis lauded the enthusiasm showed by counties which were participating in the sports after a two-year break due to outbreak of Covid-19.

 “We have counties from arid and semi-arid areas, such as Turkana participating for the first time since the association was formed,” Kiptis said.

Bomet County’s Kelvin Kemboi who is in class eight at Kapchepkoro primary school displayed outstanding performance after he clocked 8.55 to win the boy’s 3000m with unassailable 200m lead.

Isaac Barsambula of Sision Primary School from Nakuru was second in 9.39. Brian Lemeshe (Oldonyonyokie Primary School) Kajiado County and Brian Kimutai of Sinyerere Primary School, Trans Nzoia were third and fourth in 10.09 and 10.22 respectively .
