African Nations Championship co-hosts, Tanzania, will aim to extend their fine run in the campaign when they take on Mauritania in their second Group B outing on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium.

Mauritania opened their campaign with a 0-0 draw against Madagascar, while Tanzania enter the match riding high after a 2-0 win over Burkina Faso. The former side will be looking for their first win at the tournament, while the latter, backed up by home crowds, will seek to stretch their winning streak in Group B.

Speaking ahead of the fixture, Mauritania’s head coach, Artiz Lopez Garai, assured fans that his side is both mentally sharp and physically conditioned ahead of the make-or-break game.

“We’ve worked intensely on building both physical strength and mental resilience. Mental preparation has really strengthened us,” Garai told CAFOnline.

He acknowledged the advantage of Tanzania playing at home but maintained that his team is continuously learning and improving.

“Our squad has grown to a level where they can challenge Tanzania without intimidation. We acknowledge their strength, but we’re prepared to compete.”

With no injuries to report, Garai confirmed a full squad is available. He highlighted how tournaments like CHAN are invaluable in providing his players with continental exposure and a stage to prove themselves.

Meanwhile, Taifa Stars head coach Hemed Suleiman (Morocco) is full of optimism following their opening-day triumph. He believes the team can maintain momentum and secure a second successive win.

“There’s a fantastic spirit in the squad. We’re mentally prepared and in good shape physically. We want to carry this energy forward,” said Suleiman. However, he admitted the team must improve their offensive play.
“We need to sharpen our attack. Scoring isn’t easy in African football — matches are tight — but we’re working to become more threatening up front.” Despite the win, Suleiman emphasised the importance of treating Mauritania with seriousness.

Coach Suleiman also called on local fans to come out in large numbers and recreate the lively home support seen during the opening match. As Madagascar remains in the running, the battle for top spots in Group B is far from settled. Mauritania cannot afford another setback, while a second win for Tanzania would likely confirm their place in the knockout stages.
