CHAN 2024: Deposed champions Senegal beat Sudan to claim third place
By Luke Oluoch, August 29, 20252022 CHAN defending champions, Senegal, have capped off their performance with a third-place finish after edging Sudan 4-2 in post-match penalties this Friday, August 29, 2025.
Sueleiman Diallo’s team, whose quest for a record third continental title was ended by Morocco, regrouped to beat Sudan after coming from a goal down to draw 1-1 in regulation time in the third-place playoff clash staged at the Namboole stadium in Uganda
The clash at Nelson Mandela Namboole saw a huge crowd turn up for the clash after Uganda’s government accorded fans free entry to the stadium for the tie.
Podium finish
It was the Teranga Lions who claimed the victory when it mattered to seal a podium finish. The clash pitting the two sides in preliminary rounds ended in a stalemate.
Kwesi Appiah’s side got their noses in front as striker Mohamed Teya rose highest to nod home from close range from a well-taken cross.
The eastern African nation, which needed penalty shootout wins against Algeria to storm the last four, was, however, pegged back in the second half after Senegal restored parity.
Seyni Mbaye Ndiaye this time used his height advantage with a perfectly timed header past an incoming goalkeeper in the 58th minute.
Neither side was able to break the deadlock, as the tie moved straight to the lottery of penalty shootouts to decide the bronze winner.
Action shifts to Nairobi finals
The Senegalese showed tremendous composure, notching four penalties in relation to their rivals, who only managed a paltry two.
Action now shifts to Kenya’s Moi Stadium Kasarani, where Madagascar and Morocco will face off in the final clash on Saturday, August 30, 2025.
The venue for the final of the eighth edition of the Continental Clash will kick off at 6:00 pm.
The Kenyan government has confirmed the itinerary of the events leading up to the much-anticipated finals.

According to an update from Sports CS Salim Mvurya, the closing ceremony for the final will begin at 2:00 pm with a series of entertainment events marking the closing ceremony of the edition of the CHAN games.
Mvurya says the team’s arrival will be an hour ahead of the kickoff at 6:00 pm.
Call for decorum
Meanwhile, the CS has further admonished fans to be at the stadium early for what he termed will be an eventful and colourful closing ceremony.
“Those who have tickets for the match. We advise they be here by 1:30 so that by 2 o’clock, when the ceremony begins, they can be part of it. It is going to be colorful, and I invite those with tickets,” he stated.
