For a decade while still active in boxing, Hellen Wafula was known for her great achievements in the ring.

At 33 years old, Wafula (pictured) made her debut in 2010, driven by passion.

She took part in the middleweight category while active and also worked as a gym instructor in parts of Nairobi. Similarly, she competed at international levels, including in Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda.

“It was all about hard work, determination, and self-discipline in the field. Though it was not easy during those times because I was experiencing financial difficulties and had to struggle, I had to keep on pushing because I was doing it out of passion,” she observed.

Despite all struggles, Wafula won several trophies and a belt in 2015 at Pumwani Social Hall. “Self-defense is what made me successful because confidence and consistency turned average into success,” Hellen narrates.

She is currently focusing on mentoring young local players, providing financial and psychological support so they can develop a strong mentality in their career paths and achieve better results. Wafula calls for local support from the government and the Football Kenya Federation (FKF).

She continued: “During my days, there was no support. I had to fight for myself, and it was tough for me. That is why I decided to be close to young talented youths so that I can share what I have with them.”

After quitting boxing, Wafula ventured into volleyball part-time while in Holland, as she is gifted with various skills.

She prioritizes teen talents, considering the inadequate facilities locally hinder investors from investing in local sports, unlike in Europe, America, and Asia, which could transform youths’ lifestyles.
