Kenya’s representatives in the 46th Men’s African Volleyball Champions Championship, General Service Unit (GSU), claimed a 10th-place finish as the curtain fell on the tournament held in Misurata, Libya, on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.

Libya’s Swehly Sports Club were crowned the new champion of the continent. The hosts edged Esperance from Tunisia in a thrilling finale to bag their first continental title at the club level on home soil.

East African side APR, under the tutelage of Kenyan coach Sammy Mulinge, secured a top-four berth following defeat to pre-tournament favourites, Al Ahly, in the third play-off tie on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.

The Rwandan side was credited with bundling out Kenya’s GSU in the round of 16 play-off after a 3-0 defeat on Saturday, April 26, 2025.

KPA had also exited at the same stage following a 2-3 defeat against FUS Rabat from Morocco.

Battle for 10th

Meanwhile, GSU edged their Kenyan counterparts, Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), in the 9-12 playoffs as Dockers settled for 11th.

James Ontere’s KPA charges thrashed Rodrigues Oranges Club (OCA) of Mauritius in three straight sets to set up an all-Kenyan play-off.

The paramilitary side, coached by Gideon Tarus, however, ended their march to wrap up the games as Kenya’s best performer in the championship.

Kenya Prisons, who endured a tough outing in the games, were ranked 18th in the tournament that attracted the elite volleyball teams from Africa.

Prisons approached the games from an impressive 2024 campaign, where they claimed silver.

The tournament, which kicked off on Thursday, April 17, 2025, brought together 24 African clubs divided into four groups of six teams each.

This 46th edition also served as a qualification pathway to the 2025 FIVB Men’s Club World Championship, adding further incentive for the participating teams.
