Barasa reveals what to expect of Bukhungu after next phase of construction

Governor Fernandez Barasa of Kakamega County has unveiled details of the ongoing construction project at Bukhungu Stadium.

The constructions aim to enhance its facilities for hosting major events such as the African Nations Championship alongside Tanzania and Uganda.

The county government has collaborated with the National Government to expedite the completion of the facility.

The partnership led to a groundbreaking ceremony presided over by the Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, Ababu Namwamba in mid-February.

Governor Barasa disclosed that the current construction efforts prioritize the installation of specialized features, including the construction of the pending C-section and the addition of floodlights to facilitate night matches.

Moreover upgrades are underway for the playing surface, which involves the implementation of advanced drainage and irrigation systems conforming to international standards.

Barasa expressed confidence in completing these enhancements within the next three months.

“At Bukhungu Stadium, we are constructing the right C-section and installing specialized features such as floodlights for night matches.

“We are also equipping the playing pitch with an advanced drainage and irrigation system in line with International standards. We expect to complete this in the next three months,” Barasa revealed in a a statement on his X account.

During the groundbreaking event, Ababu emphasized the stadium’s importance within the national sports landscape, highlighting its potential to host significant sporting events.

He assured stakeholders of a refurbished stadium featuring a smooth artificial turf, efficient drainage, and well-equipped dressing rooms.

The renovation journey of Bukhungu Stadium began in 2013, aiming to modernize its infrastructure.

Notable progress has been achieved, including the construction of a contemporary VIP stand and office block, along with delineated boundaries and expanded parking facilities.

The ongoing phase of the renovation project focuses on constructing terraces and roofing structures to enhance spectator comfort and increase seating capacity to accommodate up to 30,000 individuals.

Historic Bukhungu

Bukhungu Stadium holds historical significance in regional sports and has served as the home ground for prominent teams such as Kakamega Homeboyz, Western Stima, MOTCOM, AFC Leopards and Vihiga United.
