KCB head coach Bernard Mwalala has welcomed the return to fitness of goalkeeper Bryne Omondi as they continue to chase for their maiden FKF Premier League title.

Omondi resumed training with the rest of the squad on Monday after picking an injury while playing for Kenya’s national team Harambee Stars in an international friendly against Russia that ended in a 2-2 draw in Antalya, Turkey.

During the friendly, Omondi was injured while trying to make a save and was immediately replaced by Kenya Police custodian Patrick Matasi.

KCB through their social media pages confirmed the return of Omondi by saying: “Kenya’s number one, Byrne (Omondi) came back to train with the team with his moon boot in a sack after recovering from an injury he suffered while on national duty and was given a guard of honour by the rest of the squad.”

According to Mwalala, the return of Omondi will be a huge boost to the Bankers as they continue their chase for the title this campaign.

“We have missed Omondi’s contribution for the team and am happy he has recovered ahead of schedule to return to training,” said Mwalala, adding: “His return adds good competition to the position and it gives us the confident needed as we continue to hunt for the title.”

The injury to Omondi was not only a setback to KCB but also Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat, who labelled his inury as a blow and major setback to the team.

“We are devastated to lose Omondi to injury, it is a huge blow to our national team because my target was to have continuity with the squad but we wish him speed recovery,” lamented Firat when the players suffered the injury in Turkey.

In total, Omondi missed two 2026 World Cup qualifying fixtures for Kenya – the 2-1 defeat against Gabon and the 5-0 win against Seychelles.

For the Bankers, he missed eight matches starting with the 1-1 draw against Ulinzi Stars, 4-1 win against Nairobi City Stars, 3-0 defeat against Sofapaka, 0-0 draw against Posta Rangers, 3-0 victory against Bidco United, 2-1 victory against Murang’a Seal, 1-1 draw against Shabana and 0-0 draw against FC Talanta.

KCB are currently sitting fourth on the 18-team table with 24 points from 14 matches and will next face Kenya Police on Saturday.
