Akonnor rues missed chances as Gor Mahia falls to Bidco United
By Joel Masibo, September 22, 2025Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has blamed failure to convert open chances in his side’s 1-0 defeat to Bidco United in their 2025/2026 Kenyan Premier League season opener at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Sunday, September 21, 2025.
In his post-match remarks, Akonnor said Gor Mahia were the better side in the particular encounter, but a lack of composure before Bidco’s goal was their greatest undoing.
Newton Ochieng came from the bench to score the only goal for Bidco in the 88th minute from a penalty kick, as Akonnor began his Kenyan Premier League tenure on a losing note at the helm of the record champions.
”The general assessment of the game was positive. We controlled the game but failed to make good use of our chances. It is a big problem in a game of football when you fail to create chances, but we were able to create chances. What we need now is a moment of magic where we will score those goals,” he said.
Gor Mahia’s dominance over Bidco
Bidco United managed their second win against K’Ogalo in their last 11 meetings. In the previous 10 matches between the two sides since March 2021, Gor Mahia had won five times while the remaining four ended in stalemates.
Despite controlling the game, Gor Mahia’s upfront combination failed to bear fruit as Austin Odhiambo and Christopher Ochieng struggled to find the back of the net several times despite numerous goal-scoring opportunities.
Gor Mahia’s new signing, Ghanaian midfielder Ebenezer Adukuwaw posed a threat to Bidco from the left wing in the first stanza, but his efforts bore no fruit in the final third. Collins Akite and Victor Kunjili, on the other hand, kept searching for Bidco United’s opener.
K’Ogalo’s best chance came in the 65th when captain Austin Odhiambo got the ball in the box but was cleverly dispossessed.
”We just need composure to get those goals. The only time the opponent came into the game was when we casually lost the ball in the midfield. It was always our fault to get them into the game. We will continue with the spirit. Today, what we lacked was the final composure; we have to improve on that,” Akonnor added.
