Akonnor lauds Gor Mahia’s dominant masterclass against Mara Sugar
Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has praised his charges following a clinical performance displayed against Mara Sugar in a Football Kenya Federation Premier League action staged at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday, January 18, 2026.
Speaking after the match that ended 3-0 in favour of the record champions, Akonnor praised his players’ composure and decision-making as the win saw K’Ogalo perch at the top ofthe league standings with 33 points, same as their arch rivals, AFC Leopards, who come in second with a weaker goal difference.
“We controlled the game and had many options, whether attacking from wide areas or playing through the middle,” Akonnor said. “The players had the freedom to make decisions, and they made the right ones. They were calm, they processed everything well, and we are very happy with the performance.”
Taking full control
K’Ogalo took control of the tie early in the contest and were rewarded in the 14th minute when Felix Oluoch opened the scoring. The forward notched his seventh goal of the season, calmly converting a superb cross from Paul Ochuoga to give the hosts a deserved lead.

The pressure continued to mount on Mara Sugar, and Gor Mahia doubled their advantage in the 28th minute. New signing Jackson Dwang played a key role, providing the assist for Musa Shariff, who made no mistake in finishing to put daylight between the two sides before the break.
Gor Mahia remained in control throughout the second half, dictating the tempo and limiting the visitors’ attacking threat. The result was sealed late in the game when Samuel Kapen struck in the 84th minute, benefiting from excellent work by Ebenezer Assifuah to cap off a polished team display.
With Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards now locked in a tight title race and K’Ogalo still holding a game in hand, the championship battle is shaping up to be an enthralling one.
However, with the momentum firmly on their side, Gor Mahia will look to build on Sunday’s result as the title race gathers pace.
