Struggling AFC Leopards, Shabana share spoils
Struggling AFC Leopards and Shabana FC shared spoils after their 1-1 draw in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League match played at Ulinzi Sports Complex on Sunday, October 1, 2023.
Both sides have had a poor start to the new campaign, and none could get a vital victory in week five.
Brian Yakhama had scored the first goal for AFC Leopards, but the National Super League champions equalized later to ensure the points were eventually equally shared.
Meanwhile, Tore Bobe would have scored the first goal of the match, but Enock Agwanda ended up sending his powerful effort wide in the 10th minute.
Levis Opiyo made a vital save to deny Shabana a goal in the 13th minute as the visitors piled more pressure on their opponents.
In the 15th minute, Ingwe got a chance to break the deadlock when their player was fouled inside the penalty area. They were awarded a penalty, which was converted by Yakhama.
Shabana equaliser
Shabana, who have failed to replicate the fine season they had in the second tier, managed to equalize in the 24th minute.
The league debutants won a free kick, which was delivered into the box where Ongechi was waiting. Ongechi’s header was too powerful for Opiyo to keep it out.
Ongechi came close to claiming a brace three minutes after the half-hour mark, but his shot, fired from a promising point, went out.
A combination of Boniface Kweya and Cliff Nyakeya, who had been linked with a move to Shabana in the last transfer window, almost gave Ingwe the lead. Kweya’s fine pass was collected by Nyakeya, who beat his opponents, but he was left disappointed as his effort went out.
