Know them: Who are 7 players set for Harambee Stars debuts?
Ahead of the Four-Nations tournament in Malawi, head coach Engin Firat has named seven new faces in the Harambee Stars squad.
Although they might drop when the final squad is named before heading south for the March 18–24 competition, their inclusion paves the way for them to potentially make their debuts for the national senior side.
Murang’a Seal’s goalkeeper, Bonphas Munyasa, is among the new faces included by Firat. He has been one of the outstanding players for the Premier League debutants, and his output has earned recognition with the call-up.
This is a big boost to Munyasa’s career, given some difficult moments he underwent previously. He was dropped by Sofapaka and Kenya Police after having trained with them. He then moved to Seal and secured a regular starting slot, paving the way for his entry into the Harambee Stars’ squad list.
Alphonse Omija is the other new name in the squad, and the Oman-based player will have to work extra hard if he has to secure his debut given the number of high-profile defenders included in the new squad.
Kaycie Odhiambo has been one of the best players for AFC Leopards, especially in the second round of the league. The Ingwe assistant captain will also face stiff competition, given that the other midfielders are more experienced than him.
Gor Mahia’s new signing, Shariff Musa and John Ayunga, who is plying trade in Scotland, have also been named for the first time ever.
Chrispine Erwambo of Tusker and Bandari’s David Sakwa are the other new faces on Firat’s team. Despite being a recent signing for the Brewers from the National Super League side Elite FC, Erwambo has proved to be a key member of Robert Matno’s side.
Sakwa’s inclusion also comes after recently featuring for Kiminini Combined, a Division One outfit. He is Bandari’s mid-season signing, and his performances for the Dockers since then have been impressive, catapulting him to a possible stage with the national side.
