Sports Minister Salim Mvurya has confirmed that Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County will be ready to host the 2025 Mashujaa Day celebrations.

Speaking during an inspection tour this week onWednesday Mvurya expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of construction, revealing that 15 per cent of the work has been completed within three weeks.

Set to have a seating capacity of 10,000, the flagship project aims not only to stage the national fete but also to transform sports development in the region.

“We remain on course to hand over the stadium by October 6, 2025,” the Cabinet Secretary stated, recalling his February announcement of the Government’s commitment to deliver the facility.

Mvurya, who was accompanied by the County Commissioner, members of the County Security team, the Deputy Speaker, CEC Members led by the CEC Chair for Sports and several MCAs during the visit, further affirmed plans to further upgrade the stadium to support a broader range of sports, including athletics, after Mashujaa Day.

“As directed by His Excellency President William Ruto, all sports facilities must meet uniform and international standards to grow talent from grassroots to the national level. Ithookwe Stadium will be a game-changer for this region,” he added.

Highlighting collaboration, CS Mvurya praised the partnership between the National Government and the County Government of Kitui under Governor Julius Malombe, describing it as vital for successful delivery.

He noted that “this project is not just a national milestone. It’s a transformational opportunity for the people of Kitui, promising improved infrastructure, job creation, and sustained economic growth”.

The CS underscored the importance of local involvement, instructing the contractor to prioritise hiring local youth and skilled artisans.

“Our goal is not just to build stadiums but to empower communities. Local residents must benefit directly through employment and future opportunities,” Hon. Mvurya emphasised.

During the tour, Kitui’s Deputy Governor welcomed the Government’s efforts and progress, urging residents to support the initiative.

His remarks were echoed by Speaker of the County Assembly, Kevin Kinengo Katisya, who reaffirmed the Assembly’s backing for the project.
