Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua has castigated President William Ruto’s administration for the formation of a broad-based government.
Speaking during a live interview with a local TV station on Tuesday night of August 6, 2024, Karua said that Ruto has violated the 2010 Constitution with the formation of the broad-based government.
She further likened the formation to a come-we-stay marriage adding that it will lead to unconstitutionality in the conduct of business of the National Assembly.
“This broad-based government is as broad as KK and ODM because this is where it stops, it is the KK coalition and a newfound wherever ODM, “Karua stated.
“And I am saying without entering into a formal coalition this is a come-we-stay marriage which is not allowed by the law to begin with, it is illegal, it is unconstitutional and it will lead to unconstitutionality in the conduct of the business of Parliament where a party in government continues to chair watchdog committees namely public accounts and public investment committee.”
Cabinet Nominations
The Narc Kenya party leader further stated that Ruto’s recent cabinet appointments have violated the design of the constitution.
She further criticised the President for ignoring the demands of Generation Z (Gen Z).
“Whereas the Gen Zs have been asking for transparency and accountability, these appointments have lowered the bar because they seek to violate the design of the Constitution the latter and the spirit, they also seek to lower the bar on accountability,” Karua said.
Karua added that if she had been offered the opportunity to be part of the broad-based cabinet, she would have turned it down.
“Whatever changes and whatever quality of people he gets, he’s the minister for everything, he will not let anybody work. I have the experience of working with these people in Parliament, I wouldn’t work for William Ruto,” Karua said.
Broad-based govt
On July 19, 2024, during a press briefing, Ruto revealed that the formation of a broad-based cabinet would help his administration drive transformation in the country.
“I have started the process of forming a new, broad-based cabinet to assist me in driving the urgently needed and irreversible transformation of our country,” Ruto said.
