Women professionals in Kisii county have appealed to elected leaders in the neighbouring Nyamira county to stop fighting over the location of Nyamira University, saying they risk losing it.

Racheal Otundo, a valuer and Julie Nyanchama, a medic, challenged the leaders to agree on the site for the government to construct the university for the benefit of students and area residents.

The duo said the infighting over the site showed that the leaders are divided, warning that if the trend continues, it will take long for the government to commence construction works.

“The sooner the leaders agree on the location the better. There is no time to waste given that the government supports the setting up of the university,” Otundo noted.

Development tour

She lauded President William Ruto’s three-day development tour of Kisii and Nyamira counties last week and asked him to ensure the projects he commissioned are completed to benefit residents.

The professional challenged elected and nominated Members of Parliament from the Gusii community to fight for more women to be appointed to the country’s top posts to enable them to show their leadership and governance prowess.

Public service

“We have five women leaders; two elected, two nominated to the Senate and one in parliament. We expect them to fight for us to increase our numbers in the public service,” Otundo noted.

She said it was shocking that elected male lawmakers are fighting for their fellow men to be appointed to top government positions while female lawmakers are keeping quiet and expecting the former to fight for them.
