A recent uproar over several Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League players participating in an unsanctioned event during the season has reignited debates about disciplinary measures and contractual obligations.
Mathare United FC has been the first to act, sanctioning several players who appeared for amateur side A Mosquito FC in a mini-tournament reportedly held during Mashujaa Day celebrations, an event that has now stirred significant controversy.
Gor Mahia FC, whose players Paul Ochuoga, Chris Ochieng, Enoch Morrison as well as Musa Masika also featured for the non-league club, is expected to take a firm stance to send a strong message to players violating club protocols.
In response to the backlash, A Mosquito FC issued a statement defending its status and structure within the football community.
In part, the statement read: “Following recent discussions, A Mosquito FC would like to clarify some misconceptions. Our goal is to foster a positive and engaging football culture, sparking meaningful conversations around the game we all love.”
The statement, seen by People Sport, added: “A Mosquito FC is not a tournament-focused team. Our members attend matches to support the sport, connect with fans, and enjoy the atmosphere in their personal capacity. For us, football is more than just competition-it is about bringing people together to share in a passion that creates lasting friendships, connections and community bonds.”
Caught in crossfire
Meanwhile, Mathare United confirmed that four senior players have been suspended for two weeks without pay following the incident.
A statement on their Facebook page revealed the players violated club rules.
“The club has taken disciplinary action against four players, suspending them with immediate effect for two weeks without pay due to breach of contract. They are Kevin Kimani, Elli Asieche, Brian Ouru and Eric Mulu. The four participated in an unsanctioned match/tournament just days before our matchday six league encounter with Police FC, without the club’s knowledge.
“In doing so, they breached several clauses in their contracts, including the requirement for players to ‘maintain a high standard of physical fitness at all times and avoid any activities that might compromise their fitness.’ The club will not make further comments regarding this decision.”
