Orange Democratic Movement Director of Communications, Philip Etale, has expressed confidence in Raila Odinga’s ability to help the African continent prosper and become self-sustaining, leveraging his extensive experience in infrastructure development.
Raila served as the African Union’s High Representative for Infrastructure Development from 2018 to 2023.
Raila’s experience
With this experience, Etale believes that Odinga has a deep understanding of Africa’s infrastructure landscape, which could be pivotal in driving the continent’s development forward.
“Having been the AU High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa, Raila Odinga understands the language of infrastructure in Africa. He understands the terrain and can help the continent prosper and be self-sustaining in the long term. We have the resources,” Etale stated in a statement on X.
Raila faces competition from other candidates, including Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, Anil Gayan, and Richard James, in the upcoming African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson elections.
To win, a candidate needs to secure at least two-thirds of the votes, or approximately 36 out of 54.
Raila’s candidacy was officially launched last week at an event attended by South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu, and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.
During the launch, Raila expressed gratitude for the support from Kenyan and Eastern African leaders.
In his address, Odinga outlined his vision for the AUC, emphasizing the need for a more people-centred approach to tackle Africa’s challenges, including poverty, conflict, and unemployment.
He also highlighted Africa’s progress and aspirations, pledging to work towards greater continental integration and addressing the diverse needs of African nations if elected. He called for unity and support from all African nations to achieve this vision.
