Zetech to continue empowering sportsmen through scholarships

Zetech University has vowed to continue offering sports scholarships to talented individuals across the country, the institution management has said.
The varsity vice-chancellor Professor Njenga Munene upheld that sports, as a career is key in promoting skills such as teamwork, leadership, patience and discipline besides being a fulfilling source of income.
He insisted that many talented persons are making huge amounts of money for short-lived performances stating that institutions of higher learning should not be left behind in promoting sports.
Speaking at the Ruiru-based university when the varsity coaches and sports teams presented trophies that they earned during the Kenya inter- Universities playoffs in the just concluded seasons, Munene however urged talented students pursuing other careers to strike a balance between their careers and sports for better results.
“It is also paramount that you all work as a team and collaborate in honing your skills if you want to achieve better results in sports. The university has provided a conducive environment to take your talents to another level but you must work hard to make it happen,” advised Munene.
On his part, former Harambee Stars coach Jacob Mulee alias Ghost congratulated the talented sportsmen and ladies on their achievements and encouraged them to stay disciplined and strive towards excelling in both sports and education to sustain their sports careers.
Mulee noted the need for universities and secondary schools across the country to invest more in sports with as much zeal they put in other careers.
“We need to strike a balance between sports and education. The two go hand in hand because every sportsperson must also have some level of education. We also need to invest in discipline because you cannot go anywhere in this field without discipline,” he said.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, an alumnus and a beneficiary of the Zetech sports scholarship Naomi Kimemia appreciated the institution for supporting her through her studies while helping her nurture her career in basketball.
During the 11th edition of Kenya universities sports Federation, the university’s Karate men team emerged winners while the ladies team came second behind in the USIU Women League but both of them were overall winners during the Strathmore Karate Open Championship.
In Basketball ladies Zetech Sparks won the KUSA Nairobi and national 3 on 3 basketball competitions while their male counterparts Zetech Titans won the Kusa Nairobi region and the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) Division 1 league.
In total, the university bagged 17 trophies earned by various teams for various categories in Basketball, Football, Karate, Rugby and volleyball games.
