Youth call for release of protestors nabbed in demos
The anti-government protests paralysed business and transport activities in Kisii town for the better part of yesterday.
Carrying posters and chanting anti-government slogans, the protesters demanded that the government releases scores of youth arrested during the three-week demonstrations in various parts of the country.
The demonstrators paralysed transport on the Kisii-Migori-Isebania, Kisii – Nairobi and Kisii-Kilgoris roads, leaving hundreds of motorists and commuters stranded in Kisii town.
Traders also closed their business for fear of looting. However, no injuries were reported as anti-riot police officers monitored the proceedings without engaging the protestors in running battles.
During the uprising
Geoffrey Moruri, a protester also demanded justice for scores of protestors killed during the uprising.
“We are only having phones, twigs and are marching peacefully. Police should protect and not kill us,” Moruri as he joined other protestors.
He accused President William Ruto of failing to implement his pre-election pledges of uplifting the lives of hustlers.
“It is unfortunate that the President rewarded old friends and left out youths to languish in abject poverty,” Moruri said.’
Moruri said majority of educated youths were suffering and challenged governors to employ more youths to ease their suffering.
Rodgers Mauti called on the President to dissolve Parliament to pave way for fresh election, saying, Kenyans are fed up with poor leadership and governance. He lauded the president for sending Cabinet Secretaries home, but demanded that he also sends Members of Parliament packing so that Kenyans can elect new leaders.
“ Leaders pledged to improve the lives if Kenyans but we are getting poorer every day. We need honest and serious leaders to fix the mess,” Mauti said.
