What local clubs are doing during league suspension
With Kenya confirming three coronavirus cases in the country, sporting organisations reacted swiftly by suspending activities.
From today, all football activities in the country will be suspended for the next 30 days following a directive by the government.
Football Kenya Federation was the first to make the declaration with the Kenya Premier League, organisers of the country’s to flight, following suit.
“Kenya Premier League will be monitoring the situation based on the regular updates from the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government suspending all public gatherings, meetings, religious crusades and games. In the interim, we will see if league matches can resume on April 4 2020,” said KPL CEO Jack Oguda in a statement.
With no action going on, what will the various teams in the KPL and National Super League be doing?
Gor Mahia team manager Jolawi Obondo told People Sport the club will chat the way forward after meeting the squad.
“This is a sensitive matter but after consulting the chairman, we will know the way forward. In the meantime, we have advised our players to self quarantine and check on their movements even as they take a break,” he said.
Mathare United CEO Jecktone Obure says the club will not train for the next 14 days to minimise any potential dangers.
“We will meet the staff and afterwards do a memo to the players after deliberations. The players will be off and we have strongly advised them to take care of themselves,” offered Obure.
His Kisumu Allstars counterpart Nicholas Ochieng said the club will provide the players with sanitizers before and after training.
“We have to take precautions to the best of our ability because the players’ lives are critical. We do minimal ball work minus contact and provide tips on safety.”
Western Stima chairman Laban Jobita said all health directives will be followed to the letter even as his players will be advised to take a break while Ulinzi Stars coach Benjamin Nyangweso confirmed his charges are still training while being monitored by the team doctors.
In the second tier National Super League, clubs are also taking the concerns to heart with Bidco United and Coast Stima already giving their players off days with strict advice to reduce interactions until resumption of full training.
