The Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula has called on the government to accelerate its commitment to upgrading the Great North Road into a dual carriageway to mitigate accidents.

Wetang’ula’s plea follows a tragic accident in the Ngata area that claimed the lives of over eight individuals on Monday morning.

According to the Wetang’ula, the Ngata stretch is one of the most perilous sections of the highway, and urgent road improvements are essential to prevent further accidents.

“At approximately 3:30 am today, a heart-wrenching incident unfolded in Ngata area, Nakuru, along the Soilo-Salgaa stretch of the Great North Road, resulting in the loss of eight lives. As reported by Nakuru County Police Commander, Samuel Ndanyi, this tragedy occurred when a Matatu, carrying passengers from Kitale to Nairobi, collided head-on with a truck,” Wetang’ula said in a statement on his X account.

“The Ngata stretch has long been known as one of the most dangerous black spots. The government had previously pledged to transform it into a dual carriageway in an effort to reduce such accidents,” he added.

He appealed to the government to expedite these improvements to prevent further road accidents.

“I earnestly appeal to the government to expedite these improvements to prevent further road accidents,” he pleaded.

Wetang’ula’s message of condolence

Wetang’ula concluded his statement by offering his heartfelt condolences to the families who have been affected by the accident.

“My deepest and most sincere condolences go out to the grieving families of the victims during this incredibly challenging time! May the lost souls rest in peace,” Weta concluded.
