Wetangula to tackle row over House majority
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula yesterday said the controversial issue of leadership wrangles between Kenya Kwanza and Azimio-One Kenya Coalition is a simple matter that he will tackle when the House is reconvened.
Wetangula, however, said the matter had not been brought to his attention as yet.
“This is a simple matter, I will handle it when it comes to my attention,” Wetangula told the press at the sidelines of the MPs induction session taking place at Safari Park hotel in Nairobi.
The leadership of both Kenya Kwanza and Azimio have each claimed to have majority numbers in the House, thereby demanding the Majority Leader and Majority Whip positions. While Kenya Kwanza picked Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah as the Majority Leader, Azimio settled on Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi.
Members of the two coalitions were, however, divided on the matter with each claiming victory.
Ichung’wah said the issue was simply about numbers and nothing academic. “This is a simple matter that will be determined by the side with the numbers. What you are hearing from the other side is mere politicking which is expected of them,” Ichung’wah said.
But Wandayi in a rejoinder, maintained that Azimio had the numbers, “at least for now.”
Asked if his coalition will go to court in a situation where the Speaker gives a ruling contrary to their position, Wandayi said seeking legal redress was not an option at the moment.
“We are waiting for no ruling since the matter is clear on who has the numbers,” he said.
He said Kenya Kwanza was engaging in academics, which will not change the numbers as they are.
“This is a constitutional matter, the Standing Orders,” he said.
