Speaker Wetang’ula receives list of 10 cabinet secretary nominees

National Assembly speaker Moses Wetang’ula has received a list of 10 cabinet secretary nominees announced by President William Ruto on Wednesday, July 24, 2024.

Acknowledging receipt of the names on the floor of the House, Wetang’ula noted that the list would be compiled together with the previously submitted list and forwarded to the Committee on Appointments.

“In view of the foregoing and pursuant to the provisions of section 8 of the Public Appointments (Parliamentary Approval) Act, of 2011 as read together with Standing Order 42(3), I hereby refer the Message from the President, together with the curriculum vitae of the nominees to the Committee on Appointments,” Wetang’ula said.

He added: “It is therefore imperative that the Committee on Appointments consolidate the names contained in the two lists and immediately commences the process of consideration of the nominees.”

The Committee is expected to immediately notify the nominees and the general public, and commence the necessary approval hearings and table its report in the House within twenty-eight (28) days.

The names submitted for approval by parliament include:

John Mbadi Ng’ongo – Cabinet Secretary, The National Treasury and Economic Planning

Salim Mvurya Mgala – Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Investments, Trade & Industry

Rebecca Miano – Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife

James Opiyo Wandayi – Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Energy and Petroleum

Onesimus Kipchumba Murkomen – Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy & Sports

Hassan Ali Joho – Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs

Alfred Nganga Mutua – Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Social Protection

Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya – Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Co-operatives and Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Development

Justin Bedan Njoka Muturi – Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Public Service & Human Capital Development

Ms. Stella Soi Lang’at -Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Gender, Culture, The Arts & Heritage.

The ten were nominated by Ruto as the second batch of cabinet secretaries to serve in a broad-based government that is expected to be more inclusive and representative.

Also to be approved by parliament are the Ministry of the Interior and National Administration – Kithure Kindiki, Ministry of Health – Debra Mulongo Barasa, Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry- Aden Duale, Ministry of Roads and Transport – Davis Chirchir, Ministry of Defence – Soipan Tuya,  Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation – Eric Muga, Ministry of Education-  Julius Migosi and Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development – Alice Wahome.

Others are the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development- Dr Andrew Karanja, the Ministry of Information, Communication and the Digital Economy- Dr Margaret Ndungu and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Prime Cabinet Secretary – Musalia Mudavadi.
