Wetang’ula faults Ndindi Nyoro over fuel price debate request procedure
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has criticised Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro for failing to follow the proper parliamentary procedure in requesting a special sitting to discuss rising fuel prices.
Addressing the House on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, Wetang’ula revealed that Nyoro’s request was circulated to media houses before it formally reached the Speaker’s office, describing the move as unusual and contrary to parliamentary practice.

“Notably, the request from the Honourable Member went to media houses before it reached the Honourable Speaker. I found that strange, because communication between members and the Speaker ought to be privileged and can go to the media only after the Speaker has received your communication,” Wetang’ula said.
Wetangu’la’s directions
According to Wetang’ula, he had directed the Clerk to guide the Kiharu lawmaker on the correct procedure under Standing Order 29, which requires MPs seeking a special sitting to channel the request through their party or coalition leadership.
“As Honourable Members are aware, Standing Order 29 requires any member who desires to convene a special sitting of the House to engage the leadership of their party or coalition to submit a request for the consideration of the Speaker,” he stated.
Wetang’ula further explained that members seeking such sittings must first approach their respective House leaders.

Wetang’ula stressed that the issue of rising fuel costs should not be politicised, saying it requires a collective national approach involving Parliament, the Executive and the private sector.
“It is my view that the issue of rising fuel costs may only be addressed through concerted, objective and cross-cutting efforts across all players, including the National Government, the Legislature and our private sector,” he said.
“Isolated and subjective utterances are unhelpful at this time and only serve to politicise a matter that is of critical concern to our economy and the welfare of all Kenyans,” he added.
Nyoro’s proposal
Kiharu Member of Parliament, Ndindi Nyoro, has proposed a multi-pronged strategy aimed at reducing fuel prices by up to Ksh54 per litre for diesel and bringing super petrol below Ksh188. Parliament has begun processing the proposals following public concern over rising fuel costs across the country.

The plan includes exemption of fuel products from VAT, reduction of the Road Maintenance Levy, cuts in profit margins across the supply chain, and revival of the Fuel Stabilisation Fund with an additional Ksh5 billion allocation for diesel price support.
“If we do all those measures, we’ll have reduced the price of diesel by around 54 shillings, and we’ll have reduced the price of super to below 188,” Nyoro stated during the interview.
He added, “We must do a trade-off. Whether we want to spend some money now and then we arrest future crisis in the economy or we want to arrest the economy just at a lazy sphere, do nothing… and then we’ll have a big catastrophe going forward.”
