The National Assembly Speaker, Moses Wetang’ula, has applauded Kenyan basketball star Madina Okot after her selection by the Atlanta Dream to play in the Women’s National Basketball Association.

Taking to his official X account on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, Wetang’ula described her journey as proof that where you begin does not limit where you can go.

At the same time, Wetang’ula has praised Madina’s perseverance and determination towards emerging as the 13th overall in the WNBA Draft by the Atlanta Dream.

“Congratulations to Madina Okot on being selected 13th overall in the WNBA Draft by the Atlanta Dream. Her journey proves that where you begin does not limit where you can go. Raised in Kenya and shaped by a close-knit family, she embodies perseverance and determination,” Wetang’ula stated.

Okot was born in Mumias but started playing volleyball while in high school at Bishop Sulumeti in Kakamega, where she later ditched volleyball for basketball when she joined Kaya Tiwi Secondary School.

The National Assembly speaker further praised Okot, describing her rise to the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) in just four years of her basketball journey.

“Remarkably, Madina only started playing basketball in 2020. In just four years, she has risen from local courts to national and international stages. At 21, she represents the limitless potential of Kenyan youth, proof that discipline and hard work turn dreams into reality,” he explained.

“Madina, you are inspiring a generation to dream bigger. Keep soaring. Kenya is proud of you,” he added.
