Western teams warned against disobeying Covid-19 order

Grassroots teams in western Kenya have been advised to abide by the government’s guidelines on containing the dreadful coronavirus.

Some teams from the region are said to still be conducting training sessions and organising friendly matches, a move that puts them at risk of contracting and spreading the deadly virus.

“We have just found out that some clubs at lower levels are still involved in sporting activities.

We are closely working with the local administration in respective areas to ensure that the guidelines are enforced fully,” said former Football Kenya Federation National Executive Member for Western Tony Kweya.

He added: “The life of each and every individual in football is very important. Let us heed the government’s directive. The coronavirus threat is real and let’s not take chances by doing things that can expose us to the disease.”

“Football is a contact sport and has also been badly hit even in some of the developed countries. I am advising players and the referees to train from their homes or through online platforms since we need to maintain discipline,’’ said Kweya.

Kweya was among nine members of the FKF executive that was sent packing by the Sports Disputes Tribunal following its ruling last week which only left president Nick Mwendwa and suggested that world governing body Fifa forms a normalisation committee to oversee football activities in the country until a new office is in place.
