West Pokot: Police make progress as 90 rifles are surrendered in latest move
The National Police Service (NPS) has received an additional two firearms surrendered by members of the public in West Pokot County.
In a statement by the National Police Service official X account on Saturday, March 14, 2026, the country’s security announced that the recovery adds to other recoveries, bringing the total number of firearms recovered to 90 rifles and 189 rounds of ammunition.
“Security agencies in West Pokot County have received two more firearms surrendered by members of the public. This latest surrender adds to other recoveries, bringing the total number of firearms recovered to 90 rifles and 189 rounds of ammunition so far,” NPS said.
According to the officers, the continued collaboration between members of the public and security agencies remains critical in the ongoing efforts to eliminate crime, enhance public safety, and promote lasting peace within the community.
“As the operation continues, the National Police Service encourages members of the public to sustain this spirit of cooperation and remain vigilant by promptly reporting suspicious activities or individuals to the nearest police station,” NPS added.

Past recovery
The two firearms recovered came days after police from Marich Police Station in West Pokot County recovered at least twelve illegal firearms voluntarily surrendered by residents of Pokot Central Sub-County.
In a post by the National Police Service on X on Monday, March 9, 2026, the officers confirmed that the firearms were handed over with the support of the National Government Administration Officers and community leadership.
“Residents of Pokot Central Sub-County in West Pokot County have voluntarily surrendered twelve illegal firearms at Marich Police Station,” NPS said.
Police also confirmed that the firearms, comprised of twelve AK-47 rifles, twelve magazines, and twenty-four rounds of ammunition, are secured in safe custody pending further administrative action.
“This voluntary surrender marks a significant step in the ongoing government-led disarmament initiative aimed at enhancing peace, stability, and security in the region through community cooperation,” NPS added.
The National Police Service further applauded members of the public and local leaders for their collaboration in supporting efforts to rid communities of illegal firearms.
Police further called on individuals who still possess illegal firearms to take advantage of the ongoing disarmament efforts and surrender them to the nearest police station.
“The public is also urged to continue partnering with the police by sharing information on suspicious activities,” NPS said.
