Weekend downpour alert: Weatherman forecasts countrywide rains
By Kiprono Keileb, December 11, 2025Kenyans across several regions have been advised to brace for increased rainfall heading into the weekend, with the Kenya Meteorological Department issuing a fresh update indicating that widespread showers are expected between Friday, December 12 and Sunday, December 14.
In its weather bulletin released on Thursday, December 11, 2025, the department said many parts of the country are likely to experience rain, noting that amounts will gradually increase as the forecast period progresses.

“Good news, rains are likely over several parts of the country into the weekend, as illustrated in the map. Rainfall is expected across the Highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Northeastern, the Coastal region and the South-Eastern lowlands, with amounts gradually increasing as the forecast period progresses,” the statement reads
The announcement comes at a time when several areas have experienced dry spells in recent weeks. Residents in farming zones, particularly those in the Rift Valley and highland areas, have welcomed the expected showers, which could help boost soil moisture as farmers prepare for planting activities.
However, the department also cautioned that some regions, especially in the north, may experience strong winds that could pose risks for outdoor activities and transport.

“Strong southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 m/s) are expected over Turkana and Marsabit counties,” the statement reads
The advisory means residents in the two counties should avoid open water activities, secure light structures, and take caution on dusty conditions caused by strong wind gusts.
Weather experts note that such surges in wind speeds are typical during transitional periods and can affect aviation, road travel and general outdoor safety.

The department urged Kenyans to stay alert to further updates, particularly those living in areas prone to flash floods, noting that enhanced rainfall may lead to slippery roads, reduced visibility and rising water levels in low-lying zones.
The department is advising the public to remain cautious, stay updated through official communication channels, and plan travel with changing weather patterns in mind.
