Weatherman predicts rainfall in some parts of the country on Sunday, February 8
By Kenneth Mwenda, February 7, 2026The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a weather update for Sunday, February 8, 2026, warning that rainfall will affect a few areas in specific regions, even as most of the country remains dry.
“Rainfall is likely to occur in a few areas of the Central Highlands (including Nairobi), the Highlands west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley,” the Kenya Meteorological Department said in a post shared on X on Saturday, February 7, 2026.
The update reflects the wider weather pattern for February 2026, which is largely sunny and dry across most of Kenya. However, isolated showers continue to break the dry spell in a number of key regions.
According to KMD’s weekly outlook for early February, many parts of the country are experiencing dry and sunny conditions. Even so, the department confirms that rainfall develops in the Central Highlands, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and parts of Western Kenya as the week progresses.

Afternoon showers
Daily weather outlooks around this period show partly cloudy nights followed by sunny intervals in many areas. In the Highlands west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley, residents can expect afternoon showers and thunderstorms in some locations, especially in the south-western parts and around Mt Elgon.
These regions include counties such as Kakamega, Kisumu, Nakuru, Kericho, Nandi, Bungoma, Kisii, Nyamira, Migori, Siaya, Homabay, Bomet, Uasin Gishu, Trans-Nzoia, Narok, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, and Baringo.
Meanwhile, the Central Highlands east of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru, Kiambu, Tharaka Nithi, Laikipia, and Nyandarua, are seeing sunny spells with a chance of light afternoon showers over high ground areas.

Warm days, cool nights
Temperatures across the country remain moderate to warm. Daytime highs reach about 29°C in Nairobi and in Kisumu, with similar conditions in other affected towns. However, nights are turning noticeably cooler, particularly in higher elevations.
KMD warns that minimum temperatures may drop below 10°C in parts of the Central Highlands, the Central Rift Valley, and areas close to Mt Kilimanjaro. The cooler air helps create the conditions that trigger scattered rainfall and thunderstorms in these regions.
The department has urged the public to stay informed and prepared. KMD continues to provide updates through its official website, county-specific forecasts, a WhatsApp channel, and the FASTA-Ken service.
Residents in areas listed in the advisory should expect short but heavy downpours, sometimes accompanied by thunderstorms. Farmers, motorists, and people living in low-lying areas should remain cautious, as wet conditions may cause slippery roads or minor flooding in flood-prone spots.
