Weatherman lists areas where rainfall is expected to persist this week
By Faith Lagat, September 2, 2025The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a fresh forecast warning of continued rainfall across the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Western and Central Highlands, and parts of the Coastal Region between Tuesday, September 2, and Monday, September 8, 2025.
In an update shared on X early Tuesday, September 2, 2025, KMD stated, “Rainfall is expected to continue in the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Western and Central Highlands, and parts of the Coastal Region.”
The department added that cold and cloudy conditions will intermittently affect the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, South-Eastern Lowlands, and parts of the Rift Valley.
Temperatures
At the same time, residents in North-western and North-eastern Kenya should brace for high daytime temperatures above 30°C.
Chilly nights with minimum temperatures dipping below 10°C are also expected in areas near Mount Kilimanjaro, the Central Rift Valley, and parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley. Strong winds exceeding 25 knots are likely to affect the Coast, South-Eastern Lowlands, and northern parts of the country.
“Strong winds (speeds exceeding 25 knots / 12.86 m/s) will affect the Coast and Kenya’s territorial waters, South-Eastern Lowlands, North-Eastern, and North-Western Kenya,” read part of the notice.

August’s heavy downpours
The latest advisory comes just weeks after intense rainfall between August 17 and 19, 2025, caused flooding in low-lying areas. According to KMD, the heavy downpours were triggered by the Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO) and cooler Atlantic Ocean conditions that pushed rain-bearing systems eastward.
In its August 26, 2025 update, the agency noted that while those conditions had eased, it continues to monitor evolving global climate patterns.
During the August episode, rainfall in parts of the Rift Valley and Highlands exceeded 20mm in 24 hours, prompting an advisory for 30 counties. Although the intensity reduced after August 20, strong southerly winds persisted, raising concerns for farmers and residents in vulnerable regions.
Advisory
KMD has urged Kenyans to remain vigilant and follow real-time advisories through its website and WhatsApp channels. The agency said the rains bring both opportunities for agriculture and risks such as flooding, calling on county governments and humanitarian agencies to stay prepared.
