We will bring down cost of electricity, says Ruiru MP
The government is investing in alternative sources of energy to bring down costs.
Ruiru MP Simon King’ara, who is a member of the National Assembly Energy committee, says plans are underway to connect more geothermal sources of power to the national grid.
Members of the committee, he added, were also negotiating with private power producers on how to reduce tariffs which have contributed to the high cost of electricity.
Speaking when he presided over the supply of electricity metres to 500 households in Gatong’ora Ward, King’ara (pictured) said the new efforts were expected to bring down the cost of production for manufacturers. He said the current high cost of electricity was brought about by last year’s drought that led to production of power using diesel.
“We must also take into account the fact that the country has to import power from neighbouring countries in order to meet the high demand. Let our people be patient as the government embarks on these new interventions to make power affordable,” said King’ara.
He said Kenya Power is owed huge sums of money by private power producers and added that the Energy Committee will ensure the debts are settled.
