‘We are on track to meet deadlines set by CAF’- Murkomen issues update on Karasani’s readiness for CHAN and AFCON
Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has issued an update on the status of Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, in readiness for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments.
Taking to his official X account on Thursday, December 19, 2024, Murkomen stated that Kenya is racing against time to make Kasarani, and Nyayo National Stadium ready for the two tournaments.
He noted that while on his routine inspection of the two facilities on Thursday, he was impressed by the pace and quality of the ongoing works.
“We are racing against time to make Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, and Nyayo National Stadium ready for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments. In my routine inspection of the two facilities today, I was impressed by the pace and quality of the ongoing works,” Murkomen stated.
Murkomen on CAF deadline
Murkomen further assured Kenyans that the country is on track to meet the deadlines set by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
He went ahead to state that the construction workers had assured him that even beyond their call of duty, they have a personal desire to deliver the facilities in time for two tournaments.
“The progress reassures me that we are on track to meet the deadlines set by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The construction workers assured me that even beyond their call of duty, they have a personal desire to deliver the facilities in time for two tournaments for the pride of our nation,” Murkomen assured.
The former Transport CS also shared photos of the construction progress at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
According to the photos shared by Murkomen, the installation of seats and the roof is in progress.

Should Kenya fail to meet the CAF deadlines, it will lose the CHAN hosting rights to Rwanda.
FKF president’s assurance
Football Kenya Federation President Hussein Mohammed early this week said he met with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe.
The meeting, according to the new FKF boss, took place in Marrakech, Morocco, on the sidelines of the CAF yearly awards ceremony.
The meeting’s agenda, according to Mohammed, was around the upcoming CHAN and Africa Cup of Nations editions. Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania were elected to host the 2025 CHAN editions and the 2027 AFCON finals.
“Honoured to meet CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe during the CAF Exco Meeting in Marrakech recently.
“We discussed Kenya’s preparations to co-host CHAN 2025 and AFCON 2027, along with other critical development initiatives to elevate Kenyan football,” Mohammed said in a statement on X on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.
