We are not interested in rigging elections – Sabina Chege

For the last few days, Murang’a Woman Representative has been on the spot over claims she made that the Jubilee Party rigged the 2017 presidential elections in favour of President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Speaking in one of the rallies in Western on Thursday, Chege alluded that President Kenyatta’s administration was installed after a rigged election. She further noted that they (those in government) still has the same technic to rig the elections for ODM leader Raila Odinga in the coming elections.

“I hear others say that we stole votes from them. There is some truth in that. I want you to know that if we knew how to rig then, we will also do the same,” Sabina said.

Her statement, however, put her at crossroads with Deputy President William Ruto and his allies who now claim that those in Azimio la Umoja movement have sensed defeat in the coming election and now want to engage in election malpractice to clinch power.

Ruto, who rubbished Chege’s remarks, exuded confidence that his Kenya Kwanza coalition will win the elections.

“Our competitors have now accepted that we have defeated them in terms of agenda and votes. Their option now is to rig the elections. We want to tell them we are ready for them,” Ruto said.

Adding: “If you look at us and this entire brigade that I am leading, do we look like people whose votes can be stolen. We shall beat our competitors very early in the morning.”

Chege, who had previously noted that her remarks in Vihiga were taken out of context by their competitors in Ruto’s side, said that Azimio la Umoja has no intention of rigging the election noting that they will win the presidency on a fair ground.

Speaking in Homa Bay where the Azimio la Umoja team members took their rallies on Sunday, Chege noted that they had no business in stealing the election for they had the numbers to win the elections.

“I want to tell our competitors that we are not interested in rigging the elections because Baba (Raila) is people’s project and he is going to be the people’s president. Let them wait for August 9 when Raila will be declared the fifth president,” Sabina said.

The second-term lawmaker also urged Homabay residents to register as voters and turn out in large numbers to vote for Raila in the August elections.
