Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has called for urgent action to curb rising cases of femicide in the country, warning young women against peer pressure and risky lifestyle choices as cases of violence against women continue to increase nationwide.

Speaking through a statement and a video shared on her official X account on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, the Machakos governor expressed concern over the increasing number of women losing their lives in violent circumstances, urging both government and society to take stronger preventive measures.

“With the rising cases of femicide in the country, which have led to the death of more than 100 women this year alone, we must speak with one voice and take urgent action to protect women and girls from violence, abuse, and killings,” she said.

She further called on the national government, through relevant security and justice agencies, to strengthen protection systems, ensure swift investigations and prosecution of offenders, and enhance public awareness on gender-based violence.

Rising numbers

Wavinya disclosed that over 129 women were killed between January and March 2026 alone, describing the situation as deeply worrying and unacceptable.

“From January over 129 women have been killed till March, we cannot continue having women being killed. The girl child, God made her capable and able. Let us be very careful,” she said.

She also urged young women to be cautious in their relationships and social circles, warning against peer pressure and risky decisions.

“Choose your friends, wasichana wachana na maneno ya peer pressure. Let us be careful, one mistake will cost your life. Learn to work hard for your own money,” she added.

Call for independence and self-reliance

The governor emphasised the importance of financial independence among young women, noting that self-reliance earns respect and reduces vulnerability.

“If you have your own money, people will respect you,” she said.

Her remarks come amid growing national concern over gender-based violence cases, with activists and leaders calling for stronger enforcement of laws and improved protection systems for women and girls.

Wavinya stressed that every woman and girl deserves to live in safety, dignity and freedom, urging society to unite in ending femicide and all forms of violence against women.

Her statement adds to ongoing debates on how to strengthen Kenya’s response to gender-based violence, as cases continue to raise alarm across the country.
