Wavinya Ndeti warns against sidelining communities in Ebola discussions
Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has warned against sidelining communities in ongoing discussions over the proposed Ebola quarantine facility in Kenya, saying public participation must be respected in all major government decisions.
In a statement shared on her X account on Monday, June 8,2026, She said the debate around the facility has raised concern among citizens, adding that any decision affecting communities must be made transparently and with full engagement of the people.

She stressed that the Constitution is clear on the need for public participation, insisting that people must be fully involved in decisions that directly affect their lives.
Calls for public participation in health decisions
“The Constitution is very clear, you must listen to the people. Public participation is key,” she said.
Wavinya noted that decisions of such magnitude should not be made without engaging the public, adding that communities have a right to be informed and to express their views before implementation.
She argued that inclusive engagement helps strengthen trust and ensures policies reflect both national interests and the welfare of affected communities.
Concerns over proposed quarantine facility
Her remarks come amid growing debate over the proposed Ebola quarantine facility, with sections of the public expressing resistance to its establishment in the country.
“Raia wamekataa quarantine iwekwe Kenya,” she said, reflecting public sentiment she claimed is widespread in affected communities.

She further argued that some citizens believe such facilities should be located outside the country, saying, “Quarantine is supposed to be built in DRC, not Kenya.”
Debate over transparency and trust continues
Wavinya maintained that while public health preparedness is important, it must be balanced with openness, accountability, and meaningful engagement with citizens.
She warned that failure to involve communities in decision-making could undermine trust in government-led health interventions, especially those related to infectious disease control.
The debate over the proposed facility continues to draw mixed reactions from leaders and stakeholders as Kenya strengthens its preparedness against potential Ebola risks in the region.
