Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) women’s Premier League defending champions Nairobi Water Queens beat minnows Kenyatta University (KU) 35-10 at Kaloleni grounds yesterday to make it eight straight wins.

Jack Ochieng’s Queens raced to a 14-4 lead in the first half as KU played a highly defensive game in the first 30 minutes.

Upon resumption, Queens changed tack and went on attack, totally disorienting KU’s defence to score 21 goals against six.

Brenda Msambai and Brenda Alivisa led the champions in scoring with seven goals each while Medina Andala added six to the tally.  Irene Aloo managed five for the varsity side in the loss.

“KU played well, despite the scoreline, compared  to the other times we have been up against them.

Experience, however,  came in handy for us in the win. We are just starting the second leg of the league so we still have more matches to play,” said Ochieng.

Stiff competition

He added: “As per the team’s performance so far, we expect stiff competition from rivals Ulinzi Sharks, whom we are yet to play this season and National Cereals and Produce Board.

We, however,  are not writing off the other teams as they could spring some surprises if we let down our guard.”

Mitchel Oyoo played her first competitive match against KU since a knee injury that had kept her out since last year, scoring three goals and Ochieng believes her return is a boost to the side.

In another match,  former men’s champions Ulinzi extended their unbeaten run to 13 wins as they saw off St Paul’s University (SPU) 41-24, the latter’s sixth loss in 12 matches.

Ulinzi’s Harold Mumbo, Christine Mureithi and Frank Kiplagat led the scoring at five a piece while Derrick Olwa and Solomon Kimalewa watched as a similar number of goals for each went down the drain in the loss.

The battle for the title will come down to a fight between defending champions NCPB,  Black Mamba and Ulinzi who remain unbeaten while Strathmore University, who have lost one match in 14,  Rangers and Buccaneers are likely to cause upsets.
