“When you spend the night out of your zone or in hotel rooms, pour some salt on a wash cloth in the middle of the bed. Let it sit for a while (about two hours). Remove and flush the salt down the toilet. Salt/sodium chrolide has the ability to pull energies to itself. The salt will pull the energies on and around the bed from previous people who slept on the bed. This clears the bed from unwanted energies, which can cause restlessness and lack of sleep. You can also pour the salt on the corners of the room to achieve the same results of the entire room,” read a post I came across on social media. Bizarre, I thought.

However, the post went on to clarify, “For clarity purposes, we are electrical beings, which denote energy. For instance, when someone is feeling sad, restlessness, worried, anxious, angry, afraid, among others, some of that energy gets on the environment. Energy doesn’t die, it’s always transformed. Salt is an insulator, which means it does not allow the energy to pass through it. This means the energy is trapped by the salt.”

Growing up in Chonyi, Kilifi county, Charles Deche often saw the elders in his family bring salt among other items to the shrines for prayers with the belief that it would clear away all ill luck.

“This was a common practice, especially when preparing for harvest. The items included cereals of different types including maize, beans among others. By doing this they indicated that they were preparing for a good harvest season. It was a form of good omen,” shares Charles.

How it works

Fatuma Mwangala, Msenangu FM’s radio show host, also shares that the Mijikenda tribes use salt for many spiritual benefits, especially in clearing dark energies.

“The ideal salt for best clearing or cleansing energies is the non-refined one. Water from the ocean is normally tapped in a specific place and left to evaporate over time leaving the rocky salt particles. When you go to Gongoni salt farm in Malindi, you will find such. This salt removes all evil omens. It is added to water for bathing. Keeping the salt in corners of your house repels witchcraft and such,” she claims.

She warns though that the bathing water must not be poured in the bathroom, but in open ground where the earth will absorb it.

“The water is not to mix with other dirty water. So, if you have no open place with a backyard to take your bath, make sure the water remains collected in the basin then you can find an open place to dispose it off later,” shares the radio host, whose show Palani  educates people about Mijikenda cultures and practices.

There’s a reason the beach feels so energetically clean and refreshing. For millennia, all over the world, salt has been considered a protective and cleansing agent, both physically and metaphysically.  A bowl of salt in your home can absorb water, emit ions, and kill bacteria.  Some people like to buy fancy salt lamps for this purpose, but a simple bowl filled with salt can do the trick, too.

Reverend Peter Mwangi of the ACK Kiembeni Parish, Mombasa, is known to use water and salt during his deliverance prayers. According to the gospel minister, salt plays a vital role in wading away evil once it is anointed, just like anointing oil.

“In the spiritual aspect, the Bible portrays salt as a catalyst for healing. For instance, 2 Kings 2:19-22, we find a city, which though its location was good, its water was bitter and the land couldn’t grow crops. When prophet Elisha poured salt into the spring, the water was cleansed and there was no more deaths or crop failure. When you pray over and anoint salty water, you can use it to sprinkle over a land before constructing your building because you have no idea the kind of evil or rituals that might have been done there by previous owner. You can use salty water to cover the people you are praying for, also for protection. More importantly, it is about the prayers and having faith,” he says.

Dos and dont’s

This confirms that salt water is a simple, but powerful spiritual remedy that has been widely used to counteract harmful unseen black energy and drain it out of our system. By doing so, we don’t waste our spiritual practice in counteracting black energy. Instead it can be used to bring about our spiritual growth. This is according to Dr Madhu Kotiya, a tarot mentor, energy vastu expert, spiritual and psychic healer.

“Salt water remedy helps in healing the pessimistic nature of a person. The salt remedy has strong ability to absorb the negative, dull, low energies around you, leaving the energy fresh and pure. The salt remedy is helpful in clearing out the evil powers from your house by placing salt lumps at corners of your house and replacing them regularly. One should flush out the salt water after the healing session to get rid of negative vibration from the house. You should not allow anyone to touch or use this used salt water as it will result in chaos at home and will create an obstacle in draining out the negativities. You can also wipe your floors with salt water to wash out the negative vibes from home and workplace,” adds the expert.
