Wanga condemns assault of Narok woman, calls for quick action

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has condemned rising cases of violence against women and girls in Kenya, urging swift action to secure justice for victims.

Speaking during a church service at Covenant Church International Ntulele on September 28, 2025, she singled out two incidents that have shocked the nation.

“I want to condemn the viral video of a lady who was beaten up in Narok by the brothers because she refused to get married off. Jambo kama hilo in this century tuachane nayo. Wacha wasichana waende shule wasome na waoleke wakati ambapo wamefika umri,” she said.

Wanga further condemned the brutal rape, murder, and mutilation of 13-year-old Mary Treza, a Grade Seven pupil from Suba North Constituency in Homa Bay County.

Wanga’s sentiments come as women senators call for stronger measures amid a surge in GBV cases in Kenya.

“I also condemn the killing of the 13-year-old in Homa Bay. We should say no to it, and wahalifu wachukuliwe hatua ifaavyo,” she said, calling for an end to harmful practices and better protection of women’s rights.

Viral video in Narok

The Narok incident involved a woman brutally assaulted in the Mbene, Ngarite area of Narok Central Sub-County. Police reports indicate the attack was carried out by individuals believed to be her brothers after she resisted a forced marriage. The disturbing footage prompted swift action from the National Police Service, which rescued the survivor and arrested one suspect.

Gender Cabinet Secretary Hannah Wendot condemned the assault in a statement on September 27, 2025 describing it as “a shocking act of brutality that has no place in our country.”

She commended police for their quick response and pledged her ministry’s commitment to eliminating gender-based violence through prevention, protection and accountability.

Outcry over killing of 13-year-old in Homa Bay

Equally distressing is the case of 13-year-old Mary Treza, a Grade Seven pupil from Suba North Constituency in Homa Bay County, who was raped, murdered and mutilated.

UN Women Kenya, in a statement on September 25, 2025, called the crime a stark reminder of the femicide crisis, urging investigators to deliver justice.

Police data shows 129 women were killed between January and March 2025, while civil society groups cite at least 500 femicide cases between 2016 and 2024. Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris labelled the killing a national emergency.

Wanga’s call for education and empowerment of girls, combined with demands for justice, reflects growing urgency to address gender-based violence in Kenya.
