Wamuchomba: Govt failing vulnerable groups in Inua Jamii cash transfer

By , August 25, 2025

Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has criticised the Kenyan government for neglecting its most vulnerable citizens.

In her Monday, August 25, 2025, remarks, she stated: “This government is now famous for depriving the sick, the disabled, the youths and now the elderly!”

Wamuchomba, now serving her suspension from the National Assembly, drew attention to alarming reports from her constituency.

The vocal legislator said that although the Inua Jamii stipends were dispatched via M-Pesa last week, many elderly and vulnerable Kenyans did not receive their payments, even though they had been regular recipients before.

She warns that such systemic exclusion, especially when combined with unreliable digital platforms, could “invite a national curse.

A growing concern, Wamuchomba argues, is that the shift to M-Pesa has eroded transparency. She emphasises: “M-Pesa has shadowed accountability.”

Recent audit findings reinforce Wamuchomba’s concerns, revealing that more than 100,000 ineligible beneficiaries, including individuals who were deceased, continued to receive stipends before a system-wide data clean-up was initiated. As a result, payments were paused in June 2025, before resuming with combined disbursements for June and July, amounting to Ksh4,000 per rightful recipient.

Wamuchomba reaction

”This government is now famous for depriving the sick, the disabled, the youths and now the elderly! The Inua Jamii stipends were allegedly sent via M-Pesa last week to our elderly and vulnerable people, and Most didn’t receive them yet; they were receiving them previously. M-Pesa has shadowed accountability. I have a list from my constituency to confirm this. Depriving such needy groups is subscribing to a curse as a nation,” Wamuchomba took to her X account on Monday, August 25, 2025.

Beyond social cash transfers, Wamuchomba has been a vocal critic of the Social Health Authority (SHA) rollout. She has described the transition as chaotic, citing several systemic failures.

”The Social Health Authority in Kenya SHA is not working. Reports from our National call centre indicate several Women are still detained in hospitals after childbirth due to a lack of Money to clear their medical bills. This is disrespectful and a violation of the right to Healthcare. Release our Mothers and babies to go home and breastfeed. Kindly tag these Governors to release our Lactating mothers,” Wamuchomba said in her earlier statement on X.
