Wamuchomba calls for deferment of pregnant police recruits at Kiganjo

By , May 8, 2026

Githunguri Member of Parliament (MP) Gathoni Wamuchomba has called on the National Police Service to reconsider the expulsion of female police recruits from the Kiganjo Police Training College due to pregnancy.

In a statement on her X account on Friday, May 8, 2026, Wamuchomba described the decision as devastating and argued that the women should not lose their training opportunities because of pregnancy.

“The news of 18 women police recruits chased out of Kiganjo Police Training College because they fell pregnant is devastating. Kicking them out is wrong; rather, they should be deferred,” Wamuchomba stated.

Recruits expelled

The 18 women police recruits are among the 54 recruits who have been discontinued from the ongoing Basic Recruit Training Course.

This comes just a day after Senior Assistant Inspector General Nyale Munga made an announcement during a visit by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen to the campus in Kiganjo, Nyeri County, on May 7, 2026, who was assessing the progress of the training.

“The recruits are a fortunate group, having been selected from among many qualified applicants. Among them, 54 had their courses terminated because of various reasons,” Munga stated.

Pregnancy is not an offence

Wamuchomba maintained that pregnancy should not be treated as an offence, adding that the affected recruits deserve a second chance to continue with their training at a later date.

“They fell pregnant, yes; it’s not a crime. It’s a blessing! I request the police in charge to issue them with deferment letters to secure their slots,” Wamuchomba said.

The MP revealed that she had formally written to the police leadership requesting that the recruits be issued with deferment letters to secure their slots until they are able to resume training.

Wamuchomba further appealed to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen to intervene in the matter and ensure the recruits are treated fairly.

“I have written to that effect. Even those who become pregnant as minors have a second chance! Every woman reading this should support me in this! @kipmurkomen, please intervene,” Wamuchomba stated.
