Waiguru vows to restore dignity for abandoned elders in Kirinyaga
By Bancy Lole, December 6, 2025Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has directed county officials to fast-track and finalise land ownership documents for Sagana Home for the Elderly, ending years of uncertainty that have threatened the stability of the facility.
Speaking on Saturday, December 6, 2025, during a visit to the home, Waiguru expressed concern over the long-standing challenges the institution has faced, especially regarding land ownership.
The home currently hosts 37 elderly and vulnerable women, many of whom have been neglected or abandoned by their families.
Waiguru described the situation as “heartbreaking and unacceptable”, noting that the lack of proper land documentation has exposed the home to constant threats and disputes.
She ordered the county executive to process and issue the title deed within a week to secure the home’s future.
“We must ensure that this land is protected once and for all. These elderly women deserve a safe, stable, and dignified place to call home,” she said.
Water shortage
Beyond land issues, Waiguru also pledged to address the water shortage that has affected the facility for years. She assured the management that the county would provide a permanent solution to guarantee reliable access to clean water.
Waiguru further urged families to take responsibility for their ageing parents instead of abandoning them, emphasising that caring for the elderly is both a moral obligation and a blessing.
“It is devastating to see our senior citizens neglected. We must show love and gratitude to those who raised us. Caring for them is a source of blessings,” she added.
During the visit, Shakira Khawaja, the Chief Executive Officer of Suqoon, was recognised for her vital support in uplifting the living conditions at the home. Under her leadership, Suqoon has renovated key sections of the facility, including the dining hall, walk paths fitted with support rails, and the modernisation of the kitchen, among other upgrades.
Khawaja thanked the county government for stepping in to resolve the land and water issues, saying the move would significantly restore dignity to the senior citizens housed at the centre.
“Ensuring this home has secure land ownership and an adequate water supply is a major step in honouring our elderly. We are grateful for the county’s commitment,” she said.
