Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru yesterday commended President Uhuru Kenyatta for the transformation her county has seen during his reign.

She said as a result of the national government support, the county has been able to transform the agriculture and manufacturing sectors.

Waiguru singled out Wang’uru Stadium that hosted the Mashujaa Day celebrations yesterday, which she said was a muddy mess until last year when the President directed that it be built afresh.

“The transformation the stadium has undergone is magnanimous. We were forced to use gumboots the last time you visited Mwea. Today the transformation is tremendous,” she said.

On the acceleration of mass vaccination,  the county chief said more than 105,000 people have been vaccinated adding that more vaccines have been availed to the local health centres saying the country is in the process of upgrading medical facilities to provide better healthcare services to the people.

Medical complex

Waiguru added that a 342-bed five-storey capacity medical complex was near completion and would soon be operative, saying that its completion will help elevate the Kerugoya Hospital from Level Four to Five.

“We have made incredible strides in the health sector including the medical complex which is one of a kind in the region,” Waiguru said.

She praised the “Wezesha Economic Programme” which supports over 50,000 households in the county.

“Each of the supported households is able to make Sh1,000 a day through poultry keeping, tomato, avocado, pig farming, dairy and bee keeping,” she said.

On large scale farming, Waiguru said her administration had helped improve rice farming in the area increasing production from 60,000 tonnes to the current 113,000 tonnes annually.

Waiguru added that her administration was in the process of setting up a tomato processing plant.

“We are waiting clearance from the National government for the plant to start processing the produce,” she said.

She said her administration had so far constructed 15 modern markets in the county to provide conducive environment for the local traders to do business.
