A resident of Kajiado County has written to the National Cohesion and Integration Commission to investigate alleged ethnic discrimination remarks made by Former Kajiado Governor David Kedienye and his running mate, MP Kajiado North Joseph Manje.
Edna Kerubo Nyariara through lawyer Danstan Omari claims the said utterances were made with a sole intent of ethnically discriminating all other communities living in Kajiado by giving preference to Kikuyu and Maasai.
She says the said remarks made in public singled out Maasai being the dominant community and kikuyu to the exclusion of other tribes which is contrary to the constitution.
“Article 27(4) of the constitution demands inclusivity of all persons without in any way discriminating either directly or indirectly against any person on grounds of ethnic and social origin,” she claims in the letter to NCIC.
Kerubo avers that between year 2013 and 2017, such remarks heightened the intricate rights between the communities and gave rise to chaos within Kajiado county which ultimately affected business run by the residents.
“It is a common knowledge that Kajiado County is a home for almost all tribes that inhabits Kenya and it is unfair for leaders to make such reckless and discriminatory utterances which may increase tribal tensions and insecurity among the people in Kajiado country,” she says in the letter.
Kerubo indicates that she was summoned to Kitengela police station where she was asked to record a statement over a press brief where she had publicly given her position regarding the remarks made by the two leaders.
Kerubo had given a press briefing alongside other community members living and working within Kajiabo County expressing disapproval of the said remarks by the two leaders.
She wants NCIC to investigate the said remarks made at Kiserian and have the two leaders arrested and charged with hatespeech as provided for in the constitution.
