Varsity staff threaten to strike over unpaid salaries

A major crisis is looming at Moi University with hundreds of teaching and non-teaching staff threatening to down tools due to salary delays for the past one year.
The lecturers lamented the delays have also forced the majority of their colleagues to skip work as they cannot afford travel costs which has become unbearable.
Led by Busolo Wekesa (pictured), the Moi University chapter Secretary of University Academic Staff Union (UASU) called on relevant authorities to come to the assistance of the university workers before the situation gets out of hand.
Hard economic times
Wekesa said they are a demoralised lot as most of them were finding it hard to make ends meet in wake of hard economic times facing ordinary citizens in the country.
“We have witnessed with sadness salary delays for the last one year and it is becoming entrenched in the way the university is run,” said Wekesa.
Wekesa stated that they have advised their members who cannot afford transport to and from the university to stay at home until they receive their salaries.
The UASU chapter Secretary further took issue with the university management for keeping silent as they go without salary for months and at the same time be expected to teach learners.
