The US Embassy in Kenya has announced that it will be closed on Friday, June 19, 2026, in observance of Juneteenth, a United States federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the country.

In a notice shared on its official X account on June 18, 2026, the embassy stated that its offices would not be open to the public on the day. Normal operations are expected to resume on Monday, June 22, 2026.

The closure is in line with the practice of US diplomatic missions worldwide, which observe official federal holidays recognised by the United States government.

Juneteenth marks end of slavery

Juneteenth, officially known as Juneteenth National Independence Day, marks June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the freedom of enslaved African Americans in the state.

The announcement came more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. Texas was among the last areas where slavery continued despite the proclamation, with freedom formally enforced only after federal troops arrived following the Civil War.

The day has since become an important commemoration in American history, recognizing the end of slavery and the struggles and achievements of African Americans.

Over the years, Juneteenth celebrations have included community gatherings, cultural events, educational programmes, parades, music, and family activities aimed at preserving the history and significance of the occasion.

Federal holiday recognition

Juneteenth was observed for decades at state and community levels before gaining nationwide recognition. In 2021, it became an official federal holiday in the United States after legislation establishing Juneteenth National Independence Day was signed into law.

As a federal holiday, non-essential government offices, including embassies, consulates, federal agencies, and courts, suspend normal operations in observance of the day.

The holiday falls on a Friday in 2026, resulting in a long weekend for many US government employees.

Impact on embassy services

The US Embassy in Nairobi provides a range of services, including visa processing, passport services, consular assistance, trade facilitation, and cultural exchange programmes.

Routine services will not be available on June 19, 2026, due to the holiday closure. However, emergency assistance for US citizens remains accessible through established after-hours channels.

The embassy regularly issues notices ahead of US federal holidays to inform members of the public about temporary service interruptions and operating schedules.

Juneteenth joins other federal holidays observed by US missions abroad, including Independence Day, Memorial Day, Labour Day, and Thanksgiving, reflecting official observances recognised by the United States government.
