US Embassy condoles with families of flood victims
By Ndiritu Wanjiru, March 9, 2026The United States Embassy in Kenya has issued a condolence message to the families of the people who lost their lives during the floods that hit Nairobi in the recent past.
Taking it to its X handle on Monday, March 9, 2026, the embassy declared the event unfortunate and tragic. The embassy, in the statement, was sympathetic to the families that had lost loved ones and those thousands of residents who had been displaced due to the submergence of their houses by floodwaters.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of life caused by the recent flooding in Nairobi and across Kenya. Our condolences to the families of the victims and to all who have been displaced during this difficult time,” the statement from the embassy read.

The embassy also projected its sentiment to other communities that have been hit by the heavy rains and the havoc that has ensued throughout the country. The floods followed a span of several days of torrential rainfall, which shell-shocked the city of Nairobi and other areas.
Effects of the floods
The massive rainfall destroyed drainage systems in most of the capital, forcing rivers and seasonal streams to spill and water into the residential areas, businesses and large roads. Regions that were close to the rivers and other low-lying settlements were also not spared, as the floodwaters would suddenly increase overnight, compelling people to seek shelter elsewhere. The emergency response teams were stationed throughout the city to save trapped persons and also aid those who had been displaced by flooding of their homes.
Agency personnel such as the Kenya Red Cross Society, National Police Service and the Kenya Defence Forces were operating round the clock for 24 hours to extract trapped families from houses and vehicles that were flooded. According to the authorities, there was a great loss of life and damage due to the floods.

The disaster resulted in dozens of people being swept out by the fast-moving waters, and dozens of people lost their lives. There were also a number of cars that were swept away by the floods, and some were even stalled on the flooded highways, causing enormous traffic jams throughout the city.
In addition to the capital, the floods hit some of the counties in the country, displacing thousands of families and destroying property, homes, and small businesses. There was also damage to infrastructure such as roads, bridges and drainage systems and therefore, rescue efforts and movement were made
