Unite to fight terrorism and insecurity, urges Maalim

Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Mohammed Maalim has called for concerted effort from stakeholders in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism in the region.
The call came even as security players embarked on developing frameworks under which the national and county governments will work together towards the fight.
Maalim underscored the need for concerted efforts saying they expect after the retreat to come up with a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for developing legislation to stop terrorism and related activities. “The risks and fight against terrorism are unique to each county and we need legal frameworks so that the county governments can actively play their roles on security concerns.”
On Tuesday, officials from the Ministry of Interior, Council of Governors, and civil societies met in Nakuru for a four-day retreat hosted by the National Counter Terrorism Centre.
Maalim urged elected leaders and other policy makers at both levels of government to work towards the creation of an environment that works against the recruitment of youth into criminal groups.
National Counter Terrorism Centre acting director Dr Rosalind Nyawira emphasized the need for society to evaluate why people get attracted to terrorism.
