Two teachers and learner killed in separate Nairobi and Nyeri road accidents
Two teachers and a learner lost their lives on Saturday, January 31, 2026, following separate road accidents in Nairobi and Nyeri counties.
In a press statement issued on the night of Saturday, January 31, 2026, the Education Cabinet Secretary, Julius Migos Ogamba, confirmed the tragic incidents and expressed condolences to the affected families.
In Nairobi, a public service vehicle rammed into a group of teachers who were participating in Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) elections at City Primary School in the Ngara area.

At least 26 teachers injured
According to Ogamba, one teacher died on the spot, while another succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment in the hospital. At least 26 other teachers sustained injuries and are currently undergoing medical care.
The second accident occurred in Nyeri County, where a van carrying 25 learners from Mahehe Friends Academy and Aberdare Academy lost control. One learner later died in the hospital, while several others sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment.
“We have received heartbreaking news of two accidents that claimed the lives of two teachers and a learner earlier today. In Nairobi City County, a public service vehicle rammed into teachers who were participating in union elections at the City Primary School in the Ngara Area. Sadly, one teacher died on the spot, while another passed on while in hospital for treatment. Up to twenty-six teachers are undergoing treatment for injuries suffered in the accident,” Ogamba stated.
“In Nyeri County, a van carrying 25 learners from Mahehe Friends Academy and Aberdare Academy lost control, resulting in the death of one learner while in hospital for treatment and in injuries to others. The injured were rushed to hospital for medical attention.”

Government’s response
Ogamba further revealed that the Ministry of Education is working closely with the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, the Ministry of Roads and Transport, the Ministry of Health, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), and the county governments of Nairobi and Nyeri to ensure a coordinated response to the incidents.

The Cabinet Secretary also urged motorists and all road users to exercise caution and strictly adhere to traffic rules to prevent further loss of life.
“We are working with the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, the Ministry of Roads and Transport, the Ministry of Health, the Teachers Service Commission, and the two county governments for coordinated responses to these sorrowful developments,” the statement read.
“On my behalf and that of the Ministry of Education, I extend my deepest condolences to the families, friends, and relatives of the deceased. We pray that God grants them strength and fortitude during this difficult time. We pray for a quick recovery for those who were injured in the unfortunate accidents. We call upon drivers and other road users to exercise due care and adhere to traffic rules and protocols for the safety of everyone.”
