The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will mount a robust exercise to enhance the capacity of teachers to ensure the effective handling of Junior Secondary School (JSS) learners.

TSC Secretary Nancy Macharia yesterday assured the country that retooling of teachers will continue to cover all secondary school tutors and all those who will be joining the service during the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum.

“As you are aware, we have already trained 60,000 teachers in the current secondary schools and early next month will embark on the retooling teachers who will handle JSS,” Macharia said yesterday during the release of the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) results.

Following the directive of President William Ruto that JSS be domiciled in primary schools, Macharia said TSC has moved to develop guidelines on the staff to handle Grade Seven learners.

“These guidelines will be released to stakeholders in January. In the meantime, 30,550 new teacher recruits: 9,000 on permanent and pensionable terms and 21,550 teacher interns, will be posted to handle JSS before the beginning of the term in 2023,” she explained.

She lauded the government for finding resources to allow the commission to recruit about 30,550 teachers in an exercise which will be concluded next month.

“I wish to urge all unemployed teachers to apply for their jobs and inform the public that we have until Friday, December 23 for the applications,” Macharia said.

The TSC boss also noted that this is a huge enrollment that has not been realised since 1997 and promises that the exercise will be conducted in a transparent manner and in line with the constitutional requirements of equity and meritocracy.

“I also assure the country that we are continuously applying all strategies to ensure prudent and optimal utilisation of the existing teacher resource in both of our primary and post-primary institutions,” she stated.

The 2022 KCPE exercise involved 28,408 centre managers, 28,727 supervisors, 74,990 invigilators and 5,647 examiners.

“I congratulate all these staffs and encourage them to keep up with the good spirit in line with the Code of Regulations for Teachers. It is because of you that the 2022 KCPE class has performed very well.”
